Fraport to Invest BGN 170 M in Bulgaria's Varna, Burgas Airports till 2014 2011-07-09 09:40

The concessionaire of the Bulgarian Black Sea airports Varna and BurgasFraport Twin Star Airport Management plans to invest BGN 170 M in their modernization in the next 3 years, company CEO Dirk Schusdziara has announced.

Schusdziara has confirmed thatVarna Airport will be closed down for unprecedented repairs after the end of the 2011 summer tourist season.

The Varna Airport will be undergoing repairs from October 15, 2011, till February 28, 2012. This is the first time the airport will be shut down since it was opened on May 9, 1948.

For the specified period all Varna Airport flights will be redirected to the BurgasAirport in the city of Burgas some 100 km to the south. The Varna Airport will provide free bus transport to the Burgas Airport for the duration of the repairs.

Fraport Twin Star Management will invest BGN 40 M in the repairs and modernization of Varna Airport, Schusdziara revealed, as cited by BTA.

During modernization projects at Varna Airport and Burgas Airport in the next three years, the company will create 1 500 new jobs, he said.

BGN 12 M have already been poured in the Burgas Airport where a new administrative building has been built.

Fraport Twin Star Management plans to expand the terminals in both Varna andBurgas; after the expansion, Burgas Airport will be capable of handling 2.7 million passengers a year.

In the first half of 2011, Burgas Airport had 533 392 passengers, an increase of 20% year-on-year, while Varna Airport had 380 196 passengers, a 2% y/y increase.

According to Schusdziara, the greater number of passengers in Burgas is due to the fact that the Burgas region, i.e. Bulgaria's southern Black Sea coast features a greater number of hotels and resorts than the northern coast around Varna, which itself is a bigger city than Burgas.

The airports in Black Sea cities Varna and Burgas have been granted on concession to Fraport Twin Star Airport Management company, a German-Bulgarian consortium between the Varna-based TIM group's holding "Chimimport" (40%) and the German "Fraport", since 2006.

In 2010, Fraport Twin Star Airport Management paid the Bulgarian state a total of BGN 13 M for the concessions of Varna Airport and Burgas Airport.

New Airport Plans In Bulgaria 2011-07-08 09:43

The Bulgarian government has voted in agreement to convert a disused former military airport on the Black Sea Coast into a civilian airport. The airport which is situated just outside of the tourist town of Balchik will provide flight services for many of the northern Black Sea resorts such as Albena,Golden Sands and of course Balchik.

It is hoped that the flights to Balchik will reduce summer season traffic in the Black Sea capital city of Varna where most flights to the northern resorts are currently received. Passengers who arrive in Varna en-route to the coast, all have to pass through Varna as there is currently no bypass in operation. The Black Sea Coast currently has 2 airports, Varna servicing the north and Burgas in the south.

There have also been recent discussions within the cabinet regarding the possible conversion of 2 other disused military airports, Straklevo near Ruse and Gorna Oryahovitsa near to the former capital city of Veliko Turnovo.

Bulgarian Govt Moves to Set Up New Black Sea Resorts Airport near Balchik 2011-07-07 07:50

Bulgaria's Cabinet has voted to turn the defunct military airport near the Black Sea town of Balchik into an active civilian airport serving the nearby sea resorts.

The Borisov government decided Wednesday to transfer the ownership of theBalchik Airport from the Defense Ministry to the Transport Ministry, acting in accordance that Prime Minister Boyko Borisov made in a nearby town, Kavarna, in early June 2011.

The Balchik Airport is located very close to the top resorts on Bulgaria's northernBlack Sea coast – Albena and Golden Sands, among several others. At present, two international airport are serving the Bulgarian Black Sea coast – Varna Airport and Burgas Airport.

The Balchik Airport is supposed to help boost the development of Northeastern Bulgaria, according PM Borisov.

"I hope that we will also manage to fix the situation with the airport in the town ofBalchik, and I think the state will do this, and we will give a chance for the business north of Varna for better communications," the Prime Minister said in Kavarna in early June, when he promised that it will be turned into a civilian port to be used for tourist flight, and that it will be granted on a concession shortly.

The Borisov Cabinet has recently revamped measures to revive several defunct airports around Bulgaria – including the Gorna Oryahovitsa Airport near Veliko Tarnovo, and the Straklevo Airport near Ruse; defunct airports in other locations such as Targovishte and Vidin could also be put on the table in the months to come.

For the time being, it is still unclear how much investor interest such airport projects could generate.

Bulgarian monasteries are top sites for foreign tourists 2011-06-23 07:23

Bulgarian monasteries are top sites for foreign tourists

Bachkovski monastery

Rila monastery, Bachkovo and Troyan monasteries are the sites that attract the most foreign tourists in Bulgaria, Nikolai Mindov, chairperson of  Association of Bulgarian Tour Guides told Focus news agency on June 20 2011.

Ancient Roman ruins near Varna and Plovdiv, along with preserved architectural reserves like Bozhentsi, Arbanasi and Zheravna, are perceived as magnets for most foreign tourists who visit Bulgaria during the summer.

Another group of tourists prefer SPA hotels and the mineral springs available, said Mindov.

"Bulgaria has so many resources, so the country can develop any kind of tourism; ornithology tourism, religious tourism but more investments are needed," he said.

After Greece and Italy, Bulgaria ranks third in the number of historical monuments in Europe, he said.

"Bulgaria's varied geography provides excellent condition for mountain trekking and any other type of tourism; the problem with quality of services remain, if we do not develop the quality, we risk losing a lot of potential tourists," Mindov said.

In his view, the all-inclusive tourist package holiday offered by most Bulgarian tour operators is not the best option because it keeps tourists away from sightseeing in the area they are staying in. He said that most tourists went home with favourable impressions and that there were many unexpected pleasures to be found on holidays in Bulgaria.
